The TUM Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Certification Program is one of the most innovative and practice-oriented offerings worldwide. Lean Six Sigma combines the principles of Lean Management and Six Sigma to make processes more efficient, error-free, and sustainable. The Green Belt certification enables you to independently implement data-driven improvement projects—across industries and based on scientific principles.

The TUM Lean Six Sigma Green Belt builds directly on the Yellow Belt and takes you from theory to practice. You will implement a real improvement project – either within a company or as part of a predefined sustainability project.

Depending on whether you are a company employee, student, or job seeker, you can choose one of the following course formats:

Business Project for Professionals: Implementation of a company-specific project with individual coaching (3 or 8 hours)
Sustainability Project for Students and Job Seekers: Working on a city cleanliness project with weekly live sessions

Business Project (Small or Medium)

Suitable for employees of companies
Work on an individually defined project to improve processes in your own work environment

Two certificate paths available:

Business Project “Small”:
- Focus on acquiring methodological skills
- Impact on processes and finances is of secondary importance
- Includes 3 hours of individual coaching by Master Black Belt Dr. Hutwelker
- Cost: 1,800 EUR
Business-Project “Medium”:
- Goal: Implementation of a significant improvement project with a project sponsor within the company
- Includes 8 hours of individual coaching by Master Black Belt Dr. Hutwelker
- Cost: 2,500 EUR

Sustainability Project (Predefined)

Suitable for students and job seekers
Predefined project with a focus on environmental impact
The project addresses pollution caused by waste management, aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG 11/12)
Support through regular phase reviews and weekly online sessions
No individual coaching – the focus is on skill development and practical application of Lean Six Sigma methodology in a real-world setting

Admission requirements:

TUM Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt Certification

Assessment:

The TUM Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification includes theoretical and practical components.

Theory:

The theoretical foundation is provided through the TUM Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt, which is earned as part of the TUM/edX Professional Certificate Program.

Note: Only the TUM Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt is accepted to ensure that all requirements for the Green Belt practical project are met.

Practical component:

After earning the TUM Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt, participants can begin the practical part of the Green Belt: identifying, implementing, and evaluating a certification project.

Certification:

TUM Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification, led by Dr. Reiner Hutwelker, Six Sigma Master Black Belt

Sustainability Project: 730 EUR
Business Project (small): 1,800 EUR

The program attracts participants from many countries. A Green Belt certification is ideal for careers in quality management, operations management, and process/project management across industries such as manufacturing, healthcare, logistics, IT, and financial services.

Typical job titles include Process Manager, Lean Specialist, Process Engineer, or Quality Management Staff, as the certification demonstrates the ability to independently lead improvement projects.

This versatility highlights that the methodology is cross-industry and applicable to any product or service.

*Based on our experience, the German tax benefits help many participants self-finance their education, as these can be worth up to 50% of tuition fees and program-related travel costs. The Application Process

Step 1: Obtain the TUM Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt Certification

Step 2: Define Your Business Project & Eligibility Check

To ensure the successful implementation and certification of your project, we first review whether it is suitable for applying Six Sigma methodology. Please send your initial project idea via email to sixsigma@lll.tum.de. After that, we will organize a kick-off meeting with you and Dr. Hutwelker.

During this meeting, we will discuss your project topic, evaluate its suitability for Six Sigma, and address your individual requirements. In return, you will receive an overview of our approach, the project timeline, and additional insights into the coaching and collaboration you will receive throughout the project.

Step 3: Apply and Complete Your Registration

If your project is suitable for Six Sigma, you can apply for the TUM Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification. Please follow these steps:

1. Complete the online application form.
2. Our Program Manager will contact you.
3. You will receive the invoice for the course.
4. If your company requires a confidentiality agreement, please use the form provided (included in your course materials).
5. Settle the invoice.

Once payment has been received, your individually coached TUM Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification course can begin.
